Bruun-Rasmussen Auctioneers of Fine Art 880/ No. 121 Autograph letter signed by Hans Christian Andersen to Dorothea Melchior. Dated Altona, June 16, 186[8]. One page, text on verso. [Second letter from Andersen sent to Dorothea Melchior that day]. During his stay in the spa town, Ems, Andersen bumps his leg against an ironbound suitcase. He followingly informs Dorothea Melchior that he is bedridden in Altona: "Altona. Torsdag morgen den 16 Juni 1868 Før jeg afsender Brevet vil jeg tilføie min Tak for den Hilsen jeg har faaet fra Dem ved Dr: Marcus; han var her for en halv Time siden. Jeg har imidlertid været noget febril i Nat og følt Smerter, men han siger at Alt er i bedste Orden og at jeg om et Par Dage vil erkjende det; og i godt Velgaaende kunde naae Odense, der faaer jeg jo Brev fra Dem, her kan detikke skee, da jeg saa gjerne reiser førstkommende Mandag. Vil De hilse Bloch og hans Frue, Watt og hver som venligt tænker paa Deres taknemlige, ærbødige H.C. Andersen Til Fru D. Melchior." However, the recovery took longer than expected, and it was close to the 1st of July, before he could finally return to Denmark. Diaries June 18, 1868: “Inat sov jeg urolig, drømte at jeg reed paa en Niilhest der vilde sluge mit Been. Sendt Brev til Fru Melchior”. (ENG: Last night I had an uneasy sleep and dreamt that I was riding a Behemot that wanted to swallow my leg. Sent letter to Mrs Melchior [...]). The intimate friends of H.C. Andersen in his later years were Moritz Melchior, a wealthy banker, and especially his wife Dorothea Melchior (1823–85). As a regular guest of the Melchior family at their house Rolighed, Andersen died there in August 1875. Provenance: The Danish Hans Christian Andersen collector Kay Høeg (1894–1947).
