Inscribed on flyleaf to the diplomat Friedrich Christian Ferdinand v. Pechlin. With half title. Bound in later full cloth binding, spine with wear. The inscription goes: “Digteren Statsmanden, den ædle F.v. Pechlin, Excellense, Storkors af flere Ordener & & bringer jeg disse Blade fra min Have, hjerteligst og i dyb Ærbødighed”. (In English: “The poet, the statesman, the noble F. v. Pechlin, Excellency and recipient of the Grand Cross of several orders – I bring these leaves from my garden, wholeheartedly and with deep reverence.”). H. C. Andersen kept a great circle of friends and was constantly on the move. He came to know Pechlin in the 1840s, and in 1843 he visited the family in Frankfurt, during one of his many travels abroad. Friedrich von Pechlin (1789–1863) was a Danish diplomat, who for more than 20 years represented Denmark in Frankfurt. Pechlin, who was a many-sided personality, had a great interest in literature and also wrote poetry himself. He was married to Adelheid von Pechlin (1808–1882), who for some years held the position of court governess for crown princess Caroline.
